Today, I had the great chance to attend a motivational speech held by Karen Darke.
For many people she is either little known or completely unknown. She isn’t a celebrity or a highly publicised star, but her ambition and strength places her above most of today’s living people.
She has been paralysed for almost 20 years now. That’s right, 20 years, but nothing made her stop believing in life.
At 21, a horrible accident changed her life forever. While on a rock-climbing expedition on sea cliffs in Scotland, she fell off a cliff ten meters down and became paralysed from the chest down.
On her website http://www.karendarke.com/bio she confesses that not being able to move has been a challenge and still is but that she has come to learn that nothing is impossible if we set our mind and our efforts to it.
At 40, she has travelled the world completing trips that others believed impossible, from marathons and triathlons, to kayaking, sit-skiing and hand-cycling in some of the most incredible yet inhospitable places on Earth. She has also published a book named ‘If you fall’ explaining all the stages that she had gone through since the accident took place. She really is teaching us unvaluable lessons.
She is now training for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where she’s hoping for a gold medal.
Listening to her for today, triggered so many memories in my life and made me realise that being optimistic and having a well-balanced mind is the secret to living a decent life.
